This section is home to all our material related to the NFL Draft and more specifically, the selections made in it over the years by the Oakland and Los Angeles Raiders.
In the menu pane which is displayed in the site's default frames design, the links for various years' draft pages appear in the grouping for that respective offseason. Thus, to find, e.g., a table of the Raiders' draft selections in 2005, you'd look in the menu grouping for "2005 Offseason." (If you're browsing the site without using frames—by starting at http://www.vertgame.com/index3.html—the menu contents are found on the Table of Contents page.)
For convenience, however, all of the draft-related links, collectively, are also shown here on this one page. So, if you're hopping back and forth between various years' data, comparing, you can use either "landing page": the menu pane (or Table of Contents page) or this page (the "draft home" page).
Contents:Raiders first-round draft picks
Past Raiders drafts (since returning to Oakland, i.e., beginning in 1996)
From this site's pages:
From ANG writer Jerry McDonald of the Oakland Tribune (series in progress as of 4/12/07):
Past NFL drafts
1936-2007 - sorted every which way (team, year, position, college . . .), on NFL.com. Look here for Raiders drafts from 1982 through 1995.
First rounds, 2004-2008, on this site:
Past Raiders drafts
Last year's note, immediately below, still applies. Many of the best ones repeat annually at the same URL, or with only the digits of the year changing in the URL from one season to the next.
Most of the material in this section ("B, Resources") was collected in 2006 and has not yet been updated for 2007. Notable exceptions are the first few links under the subsection "Other Resources," which are 2007 listings. In particular, the NFL.com draft tracker has been finalized (barring further trades, obviously) and is authoritative. Even many of the 2006 resource links will still be useful as they are sites which cover the draft year after year. As we get closer toward the end of April this section will be overhauled and—time permitting—each link will be checked for its current accuracy. In the meantime the 2006 links should provide a good starting point for enterprising web jockeys who don't mind nosing around sites for different years' material.

NFL Trade Value Chart (also sometimes called the "draft value chart")
There's a very useful chart in wide circulation on the Internet which helps in calculating the relative trade value of different draft picks. It is undated and has no byline, and has been posted on many Web sites, including highly commercial ones, for a number of years. We downloaded our copy from a popular draft site, Scott Wright's NFL Draft Countdown, but if you like, compare it to the same chart as it appears on another site which is primarily for subscribers (i.e., paid features), Ourlads Scouting Services. Ourlads is frequented by scouts and NFL personnel types, and you'll see the two charts contain identical data.
Note (4/4/06): Eventually, the above-linked chart appeared on the NFL.com web site a year ago, where draft columnist Gil Brandt identified it as "one NFL team's value chart, obtained by NFL.com." It has been re-published today by way of a link from an article on the FOXSports site.
Further note (1//24/08): Mike Florio, who edits the "Rumor Mill" blog at
ProFootballTalk.com (and now contributes to SportingNews.com as well), wrote today of the
chart, "The numbers that applied when Jimmy Johnson devised the thing in the 1990s might simply not be
realistic in 2008." And there (if Florio's correct, and he generally is very knowledgeable) you have
it.

Yahoo! Sports, undated
2007 NFL Draft Prospects
- the Rivals.com prospects list, with links to player profiles; the top 100 are ranked, with what appears to be 200-300 more in alphabetical order - the rankings come from scout Frank Coyle, who writes for Rivals.com and also has his own site (www.draftinsiders.com, infra)
Yahoo! Sports, undated
2007 Scout.com NFL Draft Rankings
- lists prospects rated Nos. 1-97; not all the height/weight data is accurate
scout.scout.com, undated (appeared 2/07)
NFL Draft - Yahoo Sports' tracker is also authoritative; shows trading teams in all picks acquired by trade (NFL.com doesn't do that)
Yahoo! Sports
NFL Draft Hub 2006 - this link, different than the URL just above, accesses not only the tracker (albeit in somewhat roundabout fashion) but also other draft-related material, including the Rivals.com profiles on what looks to be about 300 top prospects!

Fun reading if you like trivia; incredible array of stats and charts. You could spend hours here with no difficulty . . . Also lots of PDF publications for past drafts available at reasonable prices.
The Draft Exchange 2006
Tons of info, message boards. Tiny fonts are tough on the eyes, and cluttered interface is a little bit intimidating.
Draft Insiders
Some free, some parts by subscription. The author, Frank Coyle, is a highly regarded scout. Sloppy (at times even hideous) formatting detracts.
NFL Draft Blitz
Includes message board, columnists for individual teams, top 100 and 300 prospects, mock draft, etc. Parts are free, much is subscriber-only.
NFL Draft Countdown - once first-rate, this fan site has slipped several notches . . . it's still entertaining, however, with numerous features and daily updates.
Rob's Scouting 2006 NFL Draft
Lots of content. Site design has some rough edges.

The focus of this site is not the draft. After all the noise and hoopla, most of those picked in the draft in any given year will play one or two years in the NFL—if they make it at all—then they'll be gone. So . . . the coverage here isn't exhaustive. That said, you will find the major developments or stories covered here.
